SAA and GOL sign a Codeshare agreement

South African Airways and GOL linhas aéreas have reinstated their code share agreement. The South African national carrier and the Brazilian low cost carrier have re established their code share agreement. This comes months after South African Airways reinstated their route to Sao Paulo. The codeshare previously held between the 2 airlines came to an end in 2020 as a result of the pandemic and SAA's operations halt.

The purpose of a codeshare agreement is to allow for passengers to have access to a greater number of destinations. To put this in simple terms, SAA cannot fly to every destination in the world so, the airline signs a codeshare with another airline that does fly to the destinations that SAA wants to connect it's passengers to. In this case, SAA only flies to Sao Paulo but there is a passenger who wants to fly to the Bahia state of Brazil, through this codeshare, the passenger will book the flight on the SAA website from Johannesburg to Bahia but when they get to Sao Paulo, they will then jump onto a GOL plane that will take them to Salvador in Bahia. The benefit of this is that passengers don't have to book 2 separate flights and pay 2 separate airlines, they also don't have to check in again once they land in Sao Paulo or collect their baggage, their bags will automatically be forwarded onto the GOL flight and the passenger will just have to proceed to the next boarding gate. This is a significant step that South African Airways has taken in strengthening its route network and growing the airline to it's former glory. Till the next blog Aviators, STAY FLYING HIGH.
